Tech Tutorial iMovie
iMovie is a video editing software installed on all of the Mac Computers that are available for free at UPJ. iMovie allows the users to edit videos, audio, and photos all in one program. This tutorial is going to be a general overview of the main things you can do in iMovie.
Importing Media
- Plug in device used to record, open iMovie, click “create new”, click “movie”.
- Click on Import button (top of page), see your device name on the left hand side, select clips and photos you want and click import selected
- Everything will show up under “My Media”
- Drag all photos and video clips into lower panel. This panel is where all the editing will be done
Audio
- "Audio tab" (all copyright free) select one and drag into lower panel. Upper right panel “audio effects”, choose one.
- Right click on audio and click "show speed editor" this is how you can slow your audio up or down
- Click on audio clip to bring it up in the top right panel and click on the "volume" button, this is how you can make the audio louder or slower
- Detaching audio from your video clip is also an option (right click and detach audio)
- Other free audio if you don't want to use iMovie
Titles
- Titles (not customizable, that is a downside of iMovie)
- If you don't lay a background down and just a title slide the background will be black
Backgrounds
- Backgrounds (choose a color, drag into lower panel)
- Adjust color “color correction” can make color darker or lighter (located in upper right panel)
- Drag text into lower panel right above your background and type anything you like
- Can adjust font, font size, font color, placement
- *side note* An image can also be used as a background, just drag a title above the image
Photo
- Click on your photo
- Fit (photo standard), Ken Burns (zooms in), crop to fill (can zoom in a particular section of the photo)
Video
- Split clips (right click and split or command B)
- Split video clips into five sections
- One clip section look at video effects, choose any effect
- That same video clip change the speed of it (speed editor)
Transitions
- Add a transition to video clips or photos
Exporting
- Export button upper right hand corner, export as a file to wherever you want!
Something a little more advanced you can do on iMovie is split screens. Once you get the process down it's actually quite simple and repetitive, just a little time consuming. If you have more going on to your project besides the multiple screens (I would suggest making a new project as this process requires a lot of exporting. Once the final product is done with all the screens in place you can just drag it into your actual project)
- Click on Projects, then create new, and movie
- Insert a blank background screen (color doesn't matter) and adjust the timing so it plays for the length of your video clip
- Drag video clip we already filmed overtop of the background and click on “add as overlay” and “picture in picture,”
- Your video clip can now be adjusted in the background, adjust it however you want it to look
- Then click the export button (top right corner) and click file and save it to the desktop
- Once that file is on your desktop, delete the current clip in iMovie and drag the new file into the lower panel
- Then drag your video clip once again over top of the new clip and click “add as overlay” and “picture in picture”
- Now you have another screen playing and can adjust that to be where every you like!
- The process repeats over and over again until you have the number of screens desired
- You can really have as many clips playing at once as you want
- You can also have a photo as one of your screens or a title screen (its the same process)
- Delete the current clip from the lower panel and drag the new clip into it
- Let’s do a photo this time, so once again drag your photo into the lower panel and click on “cropping” and “fit” then click on “add as overlay” and “picture in picture” and adjust your photo.
- I’m sure you get the idea at this point so now lets export this file again to the desktop so we can put it into your final movie!
