Photo Essay Idea
Acne is something that I have struggled with since high school and am still struggling with today. I tend to go through waves where it will clear up and then in a couple of months get really bad again. My battle with acne has greatly impacted me regarding my self confidence and self love. I had a really hard time (especially in high school) learning how to cope with it. At one point in my life I let it control me in the sense that everything I did in the day revolved around my skin. I couldn't leave the house without a full face of makeup on and whenever I did go out into the world I wanted to be invisible. I was ashamed of how I looked and felt like a freak. However, even though I have been through great hardships and obstacles with my skin it has also taught me so much and made me a stronger person today and for that I am grateful.
For my photo essay I plan on telling the story of my acne. Since this is an ongoing journey the essay will end with my acne at its current state today. At this current moment it is pretty much under control, but even if it was not I would still want to talk about my experience. The goal of this photo essay is not to show people that my skin is amazing now and how I never get breakouts anymore because that is not the case. My hope is that others who read my essay will learn how to love and accept themselves despite their flaws. That for me was the greatest part of the journey. My acne story is one that I am proud of and actually like sharing with others because I truly feel that I can inspire others going through the same thing I did and let them know how I dealt with it. This story will include my first dermatologist experience, my acne regimen and how its changed throughout the years, and most importantly my feelings throughout the entire process.
The photos will start out pretty dark and will not just be photos of my face. The only facial pictures I intend to include are a before and after photo. All the others I want to reflect my emotions and actions during that time and show a gradual progression of how I began to deal with my skin and not let is define me. The pictures towards the end with have a brighter, more confident feel opposed to the beginning photos that will be somber and black and white.
